Civil War Links
Alabama
Alabama’s first official state flag, approved on January 11, 1861, included a “Goddess of Liberty” and the words “Independent Now and Forever.” Its reverse side featured a cotton plant and snake, which was similar to the American Revolutionary War’s “Don’t Tread on Me” flag.
Georgia
Georgia did not yet have an official state flag in the 1860‘s. Numerous unofficial ones flew in the state throughout the war. Among Georgia’s most popular flags contained a single red star on a solid white field. An original “Secession Flag” is on display at the Augusta Museum of History.
South Carolina
The flag known as “Big Red” was carried by cadets from The Citadel on January 9, 1861 at Morris Island near Charleston when they fired the first hostile shots of the war at the Federal supply ship “Star of the West.” Big Red is currently on display at The Citadel’s Alumni Center.
